Determination of Carotene Content in Yellow-seeded Common Bean Varieties

چکیده
Introduction Yellow-seeded beans are a minor commercial grain type from the Andean gene pool that are eaten in a subset of Latin American bean-producing countries, notably in Peru, Mexico and Brazil. Recently, they have become embroiled in a controversy in the United States where a patent was claimed on the marketing of yellow beans. In the meantime, the scientific basis for the yellow color is not known. In this study we decided to analyze whether the yellow color was derived from carotenoids or not. To do this we selected a group of accessions representing all the major types of yellow beans that are found in primary and secondary centers of diversityfor common beans and analyzed them for seed carotenoid content to determine if there is genetic variability for the trait.

Carotenoids in Watermelon and Mango
Carotenoids, which impart yellow, orange, and/or red colors to many fruits, have antioxidant health properties. A series of experiments were undertaken to establish horticultural relationships to carotenoids in watermelon and mango in cooperation with U.S. commodity boards. Watermelon was assayed to determine effects of germplasm, storage temperature, and fresh cut on lycopene and beta carotene...

Six varieties of mangoes (Amelia, Brooks, Kent, Keitt, Lippens, Springfield)harvested from different pedological areas of the western region of Burkina Faso (Bobo-Dioulasso, Orodara, Banfora) were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography in order to determine the β-carotene content. The study revealed a variability in β-carotene content between different varieties and regions. The Ame...

متن کاملGenetic variation and heritability for germination, seed vigour and field emergence in brown and yellow-seeded genotypes of flax
Genetic improvement of seed vigour and emergence of yellow-seeded flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) is important to have a good stand establishment, since they are negatively affected by yellow seed colour. This study was conducted to investigate genetic variation, broad-sense heritability and expected genetic response to selection for germination, seed vigour and field emergence. Sixteen genotypes...
